1 Lederer, William J. / Burdick, Eugene Sarkhan
New York McGraw Hill Book Company 1965 None Stated Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hardcover Very Good  Good Tan Cloth-Covered Boards
Hardcopy with tan cloth-covered boards and spine, brown printing on spine, is in VERY GOOD condition. Two small stains on page bottoms. Spine ends slightly bumped. Brodart-wrapped DJ, with NO clipping, is in GOOD condition. Moderate chipping at spine ends and top edges, front and back. In the ancient kingdom of Sarkhan in Southeast Asia the abdication of King Diad is at hand, just as the astrologers predicted seventy-one years before. His son, Prince Lin, scholar and neutralist, will ascend to the 2,500-year-old throne. The world watches with varying degrees of understanding what is at stake -- the control of a whole subcontinent. In Haidho, the capital of Sarkhan, a fish-gutter named Tuc, recently returned from Hanoi, is ready for the coronation. So is General Hamj, the "strong man" in whom the United States has complete faith. Our Ambassador in Haidho, Spratt Brown, nervously restrains the Marines during a riot in front of the Embassy. In Washington the President's committee on Sarkhan meets and deliberates. State sees no reason for panic. Defense would move troops. Only the director of American Intelligence has a comprehensive plan -- but the President wonders if it is in the best interest of the United States. Two Americans in Sarkhan watch the developing pattern of Communist subversion and American military response -- a successful businessman in Southeast Asia and a professor of Sarkhanese Studies at Cornell. Together they set about to avoid another "Bay of Pigs." Like a phosphorus flare in a rain-forest, the name of Sarkhan bursts upon the world, to illuminate with searing brilliance the badly camouflaged mess in Southeast Asia. The two angry prophets who made "The Ugly American" a white paper in its time have returned to Southeast Asia, seven years more experienced in American disasters. They have written a bombshell of a book -- irrestibly powerful as a novel, and undeniably urgent as a message.
